Schierke
Between Spa Gardens and Brocken Garden
Schierke is the last town before the summit of the Brocken and therefore ideally suited as a starting point for climbing the mountain. Day trippers can either use the car park on Winterbergtor or arrive in proper fashion with the Brockenbahn railway. The municipality in the valley of the river Kalte Bode is a climatic health resort and lies at the heart of the Harz National Park. To reap the restorative benefits one ought to stay a few days in the clear fresh air here.
In the summer, Schierke is a starting point for hikes and in the winter offers ideal conditions for active tourists with its Schierker Feuerstein Arena and cross-country ski-tracks. The name is telling: this is where the Schierker Feuerstein comes from, although it is only drunk and no longer produced in the town. Apothecary Drube invented this beverage in the 1920s as a wholesome medicine for spa visitors. It therefore promotes good health to try this herbal half-bitters. You can familiarise yourself with the numerous beneficial herbs used in this liqueur in the spa gardens in the centre of town and in 1,141 height metres (3,743 ft) on the Brocken plateau. A comprehensive exhibition on the mountain’s nature and history awaits you in the Brockenhaus. The Brocken innkeeper will have a hearty pea soup ready. Please bear in mind that the summit is subject to rough weather conditions and make sure to bring suitable clothing.
Tip:
The Brocken Coaster summer sledge run allows for year-round tobogganing fun.
