Colourful Town in the Harz
The old town of Wernigerode is characterised by timber-frame architecture from various centuries including typical wood-carved motifs. The historical fairy tale castle towers above the roofs of the former aristocratic residence. The princes and counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode wielded considerable influence in the politics of the Holy Roman Empire. Sustainable forest management and the origins of social legislation had already been practised under the counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode before Bismarck made a name for himself with these in the late 19th century.
Explore the Gartenträume (Garden Dreams) of the castle garden, pleasure garden and wildlife park. The chestnut woods in the pleasure garden are perfect for rest and relaxation. Down from the castle past timber-frame houses, one always somehow ends up at the town hall with the Wohltäterbrunnen (Benefactor’s Well). Immerse yourself in the universe along the Planetenweg and reach the stars. Technophiles will want to add a visit to the aviation museum. Wernigerode offers its numerous visitors so many attractions that a longer sojourn is called for. Festivals and markets bring life to the centre of town almost on a weekly basis.

Couples wishing to get married in the historical town hall should register in time at the registrar’s office. Wedding photos on the town hall steps are highly valued owing to the picturesque backdrop.
