Wörlitz
Art and Nature in Unison
“... the gods have granted the prince permission to create a dream around himself”, Goethe wrote full of admiration about the breath-taking garden architecture in Wörlitz. We owe this jewel to Leopold III Frederick Franz, Duke of Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817). Silted up branch streams of the Elbe, trenches and brooks crisscross the protected landscape of the Elbe wetlands. In the UNESCO World Heritage Site triangle ‘Luther – Bauhaus – Garden Realm’, art and nature are in unison all around Lake Wörlitz and the artificial canals. Schloss Wörlitz, built in the English Palladian style, is regarded as the starting point of classicism on the European mainland. Experience a miniature Grand Tour of Europe during a walk through the park, travel through time as you learn about the history of bridge building or visit the stately homes and museums in the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm. The Garden Realm Summer invites visitors to atmospheric concerts including culinary delights on Lake Wörlitz. Feel transported to the Gulf of Naples on the island of Stein with its artificial volcano, a reproduction of Mount Vesuvius. Stein has a unique charm with the faithfully restored Villa Hamilton, an antique theatre, tunnels, grottos, and a columbarium.
Tip:
Enjoy the park at leisure during a gondola trip across Lake Wörlitz and the channels reminiscent of Venice. This trip is also offered as a 2-hour evening tour including Italian food – a special treat.
