Gernrode
To Heck with the Clock
Do you know the size of the largest cuckoo clock outside of the Black Forest? You will find the answer at the cuckoo clock museum in Gernrode during a walk along winding timber frame alleyways. Gernrode is a wind-protected location in the precipitation shadow of the Harz Mountains, offers excellent air quality, Romanesque architecture, and untamed wilderness. From the Stubenberg plateau one can see the densely forested Hagen Valley and the patina-coated spires of Saint Cyriacus, the oldest Romanesque collegiate church in northern Europe. Goethe literally inhaled this view during his fourth trip to the Harz and nearly established a ‘Congress of Geniuses’ for writers here. The crystal-clear refreshment oases ‘Osterteich’, a forest pool, and ‘Bremer Teich’, a historic reservoir, provide invigorating relaxation.
