Kalbe (Milde)
There Are 100 Bridges to Be Crossed
The most impressive urban landscape in the Altmark is found at Kalbe an der Milde. The question is why do so many moats and channels cross the town. The dam and moat system has its roots in the castle complex’s chequered history. The marshland castle was protected by a complicated system of moats and outer wards. The damming up of the water made the building of channels necessary in later centuries. Traversed by the distributaries of the river Milde and boasting avenues lined by mature oak trees, the resort town in northern Saxony-Anhalt welcomes you to take a rest and time out. The lofty heights of the Hausmannturm tower offers a unique view across the town. Feel the healing powers of nature during barefoot walking in the spa gardens and when treading water in the natural pool as part of a Kneipp treatment. Then take a stroll across one of the 100 bridges and arrive at the museum of local history ‘Altes Wachhaus’ located in the medieval moated castle complex. The valley of the Milde is one of the most charming landscapes in the central Altmark region.
Tip:
Get up before dawn, walk along the banks of the Milde and ramble across the sun-streaked morning mist of the adjoining fields and woods. A visit to the Lombard workshop Zethlingen in the unified congregation town will take you back 2,000 years in history.
