Oberharz am Brocken
Forest Baths & Rotes Höhenvieh of the Harz
A
Experience Oberharz am Brocken – on a Harz plateau between mountain meadows, brooks, dams, and forests. Something new awaits each day even during longer sojourns as the region boasts a hiking trail network of some 550 km (342 m) that you can explore during walks around one of the many dams. Gentle quadrupeds on meadows and pastures along the pilgrim trails curiously follow the ramblers. Here, in the healthy upland climate, you will encounter an old Central German Uplands cattle breed, the Rotes Höhenvieh of the Harz. This red cattle breed is admirably adapted to the Harz climate and was rediscovered by Farmer Thielecke who now uses the second generation of cattle to maintain the mountain meadows of the Harz. This form of cultivation of the sensible flora guarantees diversity and an abundance of insects. After long walks, a bath in the spring water-fed outdoor forest pool Hasselfelde or in the natural pool at Elbingerode provides refreshment. Feel a sense of discovery while experiencing the Rübeland limestone caves and the Baumannshöhle cave and, once again, walking in Goethe’s footsteps. The variety of the subterranean rock formations is bound to enchant you.
Tip:
Float above the mountains of the Upper Harz during a balloon flight and enjoy the most beautiful natural panoramas from a lofty height.
