Stangerode
Herb Witches and Harz Safari
The melodic course of the river Eine burbles its songs and a fresh breeze of pine forest air invigorates the spirits. Thus refreshed, you climb a hill and are suddenly confronted by the largest bison herd in Germany. No illusion! You are in Stangerode at the eastern fringes of the Harz. Over 1,300 wild animals live here in a huge wildlife park, including exotic animals such as camels and alpacas.
Another attraction is the Harzer Kräuterstieg, a hill on the terraces of which healing herbs from around the world have been planted. The intensively spicy scents whet the appetite for culinary experiments. Anything is possible in the legendary Harz: why not take a bath in a witch’s cauldron in Hexenweiler on the banks of the Eine.
Tip: The 300-hectare (741-acre) wildlife park can be explored by way of a safari booked at Hotel Nordmann.
