Stecklenberg
Healing from Deep Within the Mountain
The calcium chloride spring in the spa gardens of Stecklenberg, a small town in the Harz, promises as follows on its stone setting: “Far from the mountain’s rocky layer I here spring forth to light of day, I flow around many a rock, to bring you calcium, too.” (Translated from the German inscription). At the foot of the northern Ramberg massif, along the river Wurmbach, one can catch glimpses of a ruin through the treetops. A short walk brings you to not only one, but two ruins: the castles of Stecklenburg and Lauenburg.
Landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich already found inspiration in the unique atmosphere between these artefacts.
On a clear day, you can see Magdeburg Cathedral in the distance. The resort town in the northern Harz became famous with its symbolic victory over the dark season. An Easter bonfire of about 34 m (112 ft) in height enthrals locals and visitors alike each year. The mythical Harz still has a touch of paganism with traditions and ancient customs.
