Bad Kösen
Between Göttersitz & Vineyards
Germany’s most northern wine-growing region offers you heavenly rest. The spa town of Bad Kösen is surrounded by impressive natural reserves: the Göttersitz and the Saale-Ilm-Platte. A diverse fauna, mild climate and natural springs are ideal conditions for leaving behind everyday stress. Many artists did just that already in the early 20th century: Edvard Munch and Max Liebermann took the cure in Bad Kösen and let themselves be pampered.
Romanesque art, brine and wine make the highly rated spa a magnet for a wide range of guests. During an extended walk you can admire the 325 m-long graduation tower and feel the brine’s benefits literally all in one breath. The spa centre, built in the neoclassicist style with representative spa gardens and thermal baths, is particularly charming. The first German Bädertag, an annual spa association conference, took place here in Bad Kösen in 1892. Saale-Unstrut wine growers will warmly welcome you during an outing to the vineyard terraces. Linger in a relaxed atmosphere and let the day end with a glass of Müller-Thurgau.
Bad Kösen is in the Burgenlandkreis district that lives up to its name with its many castles (Burg: German for castle). The Romanesque ruin of the Rudelsburg is in only four km (2.5 m) walking distance. It was built in the late 12th century on steep limestone cliffs. It was here where during a little rest poet Franz Kugler composed the famous song An der Saale hellem Strande (On the Saale’s fair beaches). In the immediate vicinity, Burg Saaleck offers an impressive panorama view of the hills and valley. Let your thoughts drift and enjoy the vastness around you. Sunset offers the most beautiful view with the sun’s rays slowly retreating behind the hills.
Tip:
You fancy exploring the region on water? Rent a kayak and tour along the waterways.
