Bad Schmiedeberg

Year-round Kneipp Treatments in the Düben Heath

Bad Schmiedeberg is the only town in Germany to boast the triple rating of ‘State-approved Moor, Mineral and Kneipp Spa’. The three curative waters from the wells Margarethenbrunnen, Kurfürstenbrunnen and Moritz-Hauswald-Brunnen differ in their composition and consequently also in their efficacy. For instance, the water from the Kurfürstenbrunnen contains small amounts of the inert gas radon, which is said to have anti-inflammatory and pain-soothing effects. Five Kneipp facilities at the Kurzentrum health resort, Kneipp facilities at the Kurmittelhaus spa, the terrain cure trails in the surrounding nature park, the barefoot path and the unique Kneipp therapy centre provide ideal conditions for implementing Sebastian Kneipp’s natural therapy system. The local peat deposits have been used as a remedy since the establishment of the iron moor mud bath in 1878. The natural agents contained in the black moor mud have healing and soothing properties for treating musculoskeletal disorders, rheumatic ailments such as arthrosis, polyarthritis, Bekhterev syndrome, gout, and osteoporosis. Located at the edge of the Düben Heath Nature Park and

in close vicinity of Lutherstadt Wittenberg and the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm UNESCO World Heritage Site,

the town not only offers spa treatments of the highest standards, but also a host of leisure activities. By car, bicycle or on foot: there is something to discover for everyone. Following in Luther’s footsteps, you can visit churches where the reformer preached, or marvel at Germany’s oldest boatmen’s church on the Elbe cycle route in Priesitz. At the stately Renaissance palace in Pretzsch, home to Electress of Saxony Christiane Eberhardine of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, wife of Augustus II the Strong, a visit to the attached court chapel is a must in addition to a palace tour. A walk through the historical town of Bad Schmiedeberg, surrounded by Baroque bourgeois houses, the impressive Art Nouveau Kurhaus (spa house) and the idyllic spa promenade with the Gartenträume (Garden Dreams) spa gardens will have you transported to former times.
