Stolberg
Underway on the Road of Songs
When Martin Luther visited Stolberg in 1525, walking along a ridge, he compared the layout of the Harz town with a bird: he identified the late Gothic castle as the head, the market square as the body and the alleyways as wings. What do you see?
The castle towers prominently above the picturesque timber-frame town. Juliana, Countess of Stolberg-Wernigerode and ancestress of the House of Orange, was born here, which is why the small town also attracts many Dutch guests in their search for historical roots. The climatic health resort invites visitors to enjoy extensive walks through beech and mixed forests. The fully preserved timber-frame town repeatedly comes into view, presenting itself at various angles from different elevations. Every now and then one comes across traces of Martin Luther and the town’s most famous son, reformer, and leader in the German Peasants' War Thomas Müntzer.
The path to the largest iron double cross, the Josephskreuz, is a ‘Road of Songs’. The various song stations providing also lyrics invite you to happily sing along. Singing promotes wellbeing as you will soon discover. A potential starting point for this ramble is the Schindelbruch Nature Reserve, an excellent address for wellness and wellbeing.
Tip:
The Alte Münze (Old Mint) issues a different annual medal each year and visitors are welcome to attend show mintages every month or so. Edible souvenirs include the Stolberger Lerchen, a type of sausage, FRIWI biscuits and other baked delicacies.
