Salt Town on the Thin Mountain
You will have a slightly salty taste in your mouth when entering the spa gardens in Bad Dürrenberg. This salty open-air inhalation is owed to Germany’s longest continuous graduation tower that measures 636 m (2,087 ft) in length and 12 m (39 ft) in height. The spa gardens are currently undergoing an extensive revamp to display their full glory in time for the State Horticultural Show in 2023. In the immediate vicinity of the graduation tower is the Borlachturm, a massive saltwater pumping tower that was erected in 1765 above the first saltwater well. Nowadays, the tower houses a museum that celebrates the achievements of Johann Gottfried Borlach and documents the history of salt production, the processing of the Dürrenberg brine to make table salt and the development of Dürrenberg into a spa town. The environs of the saltwater town are easily explored along the Saale cycle route or by canoe on the Saale river.
Tip:
Visit the cold inhalation hall and try the beneficial saltwater treatments.
