Ballenstedt
Culture and Nature in the Harz Foothills
In the early 19th century, Caspar David Friedrich captured a stunning view from the garden terrace of Ballenstedt’s Baroque castle in oil on canvas. With calm strokes of the brush he depicted a woman reading surrounded by chestnut trees. In the background the Brocken rises above the foothills of the Harz.
The resort town of Ballenstedt welcomes you with fairy tale architecture and breath-taking views.
Abandon yourself to its charm! Walk up to the so-called Gegensteine, towering pinnacles of 243 m (797 ft) in height. From there, let your eye wander across rapeseed fields and spring snowflake meadows all the way to Quedlinburg. In the ‘cradle of Anhalt’, your senses will swiftly focus on rest and relaxation. You will walk as if in another time. Ballenstedt’s theatre is the oldest in central Germany. Franz Liszt charmed his audience here. Around the resort town, outings to the enchanted stone sculptures of Roseburg and to the Bismarckturm tower beckon.
