Meisdorf

‘The Gateway to the Selke Valley’

Meisdorf, also lovingly called ‘The Gateway to the Selke Valley’, is located at the north-eastern fringes of the Harz where the river Selke, flowing from out of its idyllic Selke Valley, has created an extensive river flood plain. Rapidly rising mountains in the east, south and west surround a hollow at the exit of the Selke Valley, which at 660 hectares (1,631 acres) constitutes the largest nature reserve in the Falkenstein region. The Selke Valley cuts a sharp groove into the old rocks. You can observe a host of different plant and animal species here. Falkenstein Castle sits above the river southwest of Meisdorf. When in the late 18th-century the House of Asseburg moved their permanent residence from Falkenstein Castle to Meisdorf, the village’s rustic character changed as a result. Since then, a tree-lined road connects Meisdorf House with the village. Already back in the 18th and 19th centuries, famous aristocrats, poets, and painters in Meisdorf felt inspired by the landscape of the romantic Selke Valley. Today, Meisdorf House is a hotel and boasts Saxony-Anhalt’s first 18-hole golf course in its direct vicinity.
