Naumburg Saale

World-class Culture in the Saale Valley

Four spires tower high above Naumburg where the river Unstrut flows into the Saale. The Cathedral of Sts Peter and Paul is one of the most important cathedral buildings in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The twelve life-sized Stifterfiguren (donor or founder figures) in the western choir will without fail capture your imagination. The face of Uta is regarded as that of the most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages. As you stroll through the medieval town, you will notice the numerous colourful bourgeois houses with their impressive gables, indicators of the prosperity this middle-class town enjoyed. The small but excellent town museum ‘Hohe Lilie’ has more to tell of erstwhile town life.

Naumburg also boasts the smallest town theatre, which is well worth a visit for its original productions. A change of perspective is achieved by climbing the 73 m-high tower (240 ft) of the town church of St. Wenceslaus. Its magnificent organ by Zacharias Hildebrandt, another jewel in Naumburg’s crown, was accepted in 1746 by no other than Johann Sebastian Bach and Gottfried Silbermann. The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche spent somewhat more time than Bach in the town on the river Saale; his legacy can be found at the Nietzsche House on Jakobsmauer (part of the old city wall).

The exceptionally mild climate in the resort town of Naumburg allows for the cultivation of the romantic vineyards and steep slopes on the valley sides. At the time of the wine harvest in golden autumn, a visit to the numerous wine festivals all around Naumburg is a must.

Tip:

A cycle tour through the Naumburger Blütengrund leads past the stone picture book that tells the history of viticulture.
