In Fontane’s Footsteps

The former village of huts Altenbrak is located at the heart of the sunny Bode Valley, protected by forested escarpments. The climatic health resort offers special forms of movement therapy that can be explored on dedicated terrain cure trails. Spruce and beech forests in combination with mountain meadows and reservoirs transport you away from everyday hustle and bustle.

Start at the Bode circular trail towards the Bode Valley trout farm, have a go at water treading in the Kneipp pool and continue along the riverbank to the Wendefurth reservoir. Try the loaches, a special cyprinid species of fish local to the region and highly praised by the novelist and poet Theodor Fontane. Not only Fontane was enchanted by the region; the wild and romantic atmosphere captured the imagination of Goethe, too, during his third trip to the Harz.

Tip:

The mountain swimming pool on the southern slopes in Altenbrake is perfect for regeneration and rebalancing body, mind, and spirit.
